We moved to Eastbourne in 2009 and, during the winter months, have a spectacular panoramic view of the sun rising over the sea. Since that time I have taken over four thousand digital photographs of the dawn sky.
Red sky in the morning… red sky at night.
From time to time I’ve also taken night time views, and I’m now taking more of day time cloud formations. My intention was always to use these photographs as source material with a view to creating, over time, a large body of work titled Skyscapes. The first few (in 2016) were etchings but then I worked on other projects (predominantly screen prints) until March 2022 when, following the sudden death of my husband and seeking a new direction, I went back to Skyscapes. However, I adopted a very different approach to both the subject matter and the process of screen printing itself. These works are now all screen monoprints and are 52 cm square on Fabriano Artistico 640 gsm HP extra white paper (c.56 cm square) using Lascaux inks.
Gone is the analytical, logical approach to building up images, using various types of positives (stencil, hand and photographic), sometimes combined with woodcuts. There are blended backgrounds, followed by ink and paste being applied on to an open screen and pulled through. This process is repeated as many times as necessary until I believe the image to be finished. I continue to experiment with under printing, overprinting, masking, and transparent layers etc.
Since early 2023, a number of these works have been shown in Hastings, Brighton and London.
